Cornwall and the West self-drive tour

Keep in mind, as you read this itinerary, that you can follow your itinerary as closely or as loosely as you choose. Stop at the suggested attractions if you feel like it or pick a spot of your own on the spur of the moment. You are in control. NOTE: Locations that are highlighted in the itinerary are noteworthy stops.

London to Lyme Regis

Welcome to England! I hope you have enjoyed your stay in London. It wasn't nearly long enough, I know, but this way you are forced to save something for your next trip. Now its time to see some of the West Country!

I routed you via motorways as much as I could on this leg of the trip in order to preserve as much of the day as possible for exploring in Lyme Regis or Dorchester. I have not even suggested any other stops.

Ask at your hotel for the best route to the M25. When you reach the M25, get on it heading west. If, after you get on the motorway. you find you are headed in the wrong direction, don’t worry – the M25 forms a beltway around London – you’ll get to the proper exit one way or the other. It is about 125 miles in circumference, though, so you may want to turn around, if you don’t feel like spending an extra hour or so on the road today. Just remember: you’re on vacation – an hour touring the suburbs of London beats an hour driving in Los Angeles, Sidney, Toronto or Düsseldorf.

Continue along the M25 until you meet the M3 at junction 12. Go southwest on the M3 toward Basingstoke and Winchester. If the time of year is mid to late June, keep your eyes peeled for well dressed fellow travelers during your first few miles on the M3. Ascot is only about three miles north of Camberley and Royal Ascot is running about now. At Winchester stay on the M3 for an additional ten or twelve miles to the end of the M3 and its junction with the M27. Take the M27 west toward Southampton and the M271. After about 10 miles the M27 will end in a roundabout. Taking the A31 straight out the other side of the roundabout, continue through Ringwood and Wimborne Minster to Bere Regis where the A31 will end. Take care at the roundabout in Trickett's Cross. Be sure to take the second road out, not the first, or you will end up headed for Bournemouth rather than Wimborne Minster as you intend.

When you come to the roundabout in Bere Regis, be sure to take the A35 toward Tolpuddle and Dorchester not toward Bournemouth or Poole. Continue on the A35 through DORCHESTER and Bridport until you reach the outskirts of LYME REGIS, a total distance along the A35 of about 35 miles. About a mile past Charmouth turn left on the A3052 and follow it into Lyme Regis.

Lyme Regis to Looe

Today you will finally reach Cornwall. The drive is about 100 miles with a couple of stops thrown in so it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a reasonably early start.

Leave Lyme Regis via the A3052 toward Seaton. Just south of the A3052 and west of Seaton in BRANSCOMBE you can visit a picturesque village church. Continue on the A3052 through Sidmouth to Clyst St Mary where, at the roundabout, you will turn right on to the A376. Follow the A376 less than a mile to its junction with the M5. Here you will turn north toward Taunton and Bristol, exiting in about a mile at interchange 29 and proceeding on into EXETER (town plan on atlas page 137) on the A30/B3183.

Take the A377 south from Exeter about one and a half miles where it will join the A30. Follow the A30 to the southeast and after two miles you will come to the interchange at the end of the M5. At the interchange get on the A38, which you will follow for about 16 miles to Buckfastleigh where you will pick up the A384 toward TOTNES. About a mile out of Totnes, the A384 will join the A385. Continue on into the city.

Leave Totnes on the A381 staying on it through Knightsbridge and on into SALCOMBE.

Follow the A381 between Salcombe and Knightsbridge where you will pickup the A379 toward Plymouth. Stay on the A379 for about 21 miles until you reach PLYMOUTH (town plan on atlas page 143). You can tour Plymouth today or, if you are anxious to get to Looe, you can stop during the drive tomorrow.

When leaving Plymouth, take the A374 to the Torpoint ferry. The ferry still makes regular runs, but if you should miss it there is a bridge just to the north on the A38. Here you will cross into Cornwall! Continue on the A374 as you leave Torpoint until you pass through Polbathic. About a mile west of Polbathic turn left onto the A387. Follow the A387 over hill and down dale for about three miles where you will meet the B3254 at Sandplace. LOOE lies about three miles down the B3254.

Looe to Plymouth to Looe

Today you will have the opportunity to tour Plymouth and the coast and countryside east of Looe.

Backtracking the way you arrived yesterday, leave Looe via the B3254 but turn right when you come to the B3253. After about four miles on the B3253 you will rejoin the A387 and continue to the outskirts of Hessenford. Turn right on to the B3247 to Seaton, then cross a bridge and continue to Downderry. The road here parallels the South West Coast Path so, if you feel like a coastal walk the next few miles offer several good opportunities. Drive to the end of the village and after a hairpin turn begin to climb to the top of the Battern Cliffs. At Triffel continue on the B3247 by turning right and following Crafthole signs. The B3247 seems to go everywhere here. Stay on the branch that goes to Milbrook. Within about a mile and a half after leaving Crafthole take the left fork (still following one of several branches of the B3247) signposted "Anthony".

Turn right in Anthony when you reach the A374 and continue for one and three quarters miles to the entrance of ANTHONY HOUSE. Continue into Torpoint and take the car ferry across the river Tamar to DEVONPORT. Follow "City Centre" signs to enter PLYMOUTH (town plan on atlas page 143).

Leave Plymouth on the A388 by following SALTASH signs. Join the A38 to cross the Tamar Toll Bridge and re-enter Cornwall. Stay on the A38 by following Liskeard signs at the roundabout just after the bridge. Just beyond the village of Tideford turn left on the B3249 for ST GERMANS.

On leaving St Germans, remain on the B3249, go under the railroad tracks and pick up the A374 in Polbathic. Turn left on to the A374 in Polbathic and at the roundabout in Trerulefoot join the A38 Bodmin road. Remain on the A38 to LISKEARD.

Take the B3254 south from Liskeard, joining the A387 at Sandplace and continuing on in to Looe.

Looe to Bodmin to Fowey to Polperro to Looe

Today you will tour the coast and countryside west of Looe including the beautiful fishing village, Polperro.

Take the A387 through West Looe toward Polperro. Within about four miles you come to a fork at the junction with the B3359. Take the B3359 through Barcelona and Pelynt to its junction with the A390 at Middle Taphouse. Continue straight across the A390 on an unclassified road which in less than a mile and a half will start to descent into the Fowey Valley, pass under some railroad tracks and cross the River Fowey to meet the A38. Turn left and stay on the A38 as it follows the Fowey Valley for the next five or six miles. Along the way you will pass about three miles south of CARDINHAM which possesses one of the finest early Celtic crosses in Britain.

Continue along the A38 crossing the A30 until you come to the junction with the A389 at which point you should take the left fork and follow signs to BODMIN and city center.

Follow Lostwithiel signs to leave Bodmin by the B3268. After about two miles you will pass the entrance to LANHYDROCK PARK on the left. Continue to Sweetshouse and keep left for LOSTWITHIEL. Only a mile and a half north of town on an unclassified road along the river lies RESTORMEL CASTLE. Leave town by the A390 St Austell road, and climb out of the valley. Within one and a half miles turn left on to the B3269, signposted "Fowey", and after four and a half miles join the A3082 for the descent into FOWEY.

Take the car ferry across the River Fowey to BODINNICK, then on leaving the ferry turn left and ascend along an unclassified road. The roads between here and Polperro are all unclassified so you’ll have to navigate using villages as landmarks. The most major of the unclassifieds passes through Lanteglos Highway and then zigs and zags its way to the B3359 where it passes near Lanreath. The whole process covers, perhaps five miles. When you reach the B3359 turn south (right) and travel about two miles to Pelynt. About one and a half miles beyond Pelynt turn right at the POLPERRO sign then right again on the A387 to begin the descent into the village, accompanied all the way by a running stream and cottages which get ever older as you go. The route through Highway, Lanreath and Pelynt takes you several miles inland. If you prefer and you would like to follow the coastal cliffs more closely, you can pick your way along even smaller which back and fill along the coast. Return from Polperro along the A387 to Looe.

Looe to Bude to Tintagel to Looe

It’s the north coast today between Wadebridge and Bude. Tintagel is also included in the circuit but, as today's is a rather long tour and you will be back in Tintagel for the night in a few days, it may be best not to devote too much time to Tintagel today.

As you did yesterday, take the A387 through West Looe toward Polperro.

Continue along the A38 crossing the A30 until you come to the junction with the A389 at which point you should take the left fork and follow the A389 through Bodmin to WADEBRIDGE.

Follow Bude signs to leave Wadebridge on the A39 and in half a mile turn left on to the B3314, signed "Port Isaac". Within three miles turn left on to an unclassified road with a sign to Rock and in another mile and a half at a T-junction turn left. A quarter mile later turn right to reach Trebetherick and drop into Polzeath.

From Polzeath ascend a steep hill and in about two miles branch left following the sign to Port Isaac. Within half a mile turn left on to the B3314 for ST ENDELLION. After a further mile turn left on to the B3267 and proceed to PORT ISAAC.

Take an unclassified road down into Port Gaverne. Follow the road inland and after two miles turn left to rejoin the B3314. Proceed through DELABOLE to Rockhead, where you should turn left on to an unclassified road signposted "Tintagel". Within half a mile turn right on to another unclassified road and then in about a mile you will join the B3263 after a steep hairpin turn and can follow it into TINTAGEL.

Leave Tintagel on the B3263/Boscastle Road and continue through BOSCASTLE on the steep, hairpined road. Remain on the B3263 for about another five and a half miles until you come to Tresparrett Posts. Here take an unclassified road to the left signposted "CRACKINGTON HAVEN". Descend steeply into the village, then continue for three miles to Wainhouse Corner where you will turn left on to the A39. Continue along the A39 until you come to Coppathorne where you will take an unclassified road to the left signposted "Widemouth". Following this road, you will soon be overlooking Bude Bay and in about five miles enter BUDE itself.

Leaving Bude, turn inland and follow Bideford signs on to the A3072. Continue for about one and a quarter miles and turn left on to the A39. Within another quarter mile turn right to rejoin the A3072. Continue through STRATTON and at the crossroads about two and a half miles outside of Stratton, turn right on the B3254 marked "Launceston". A half mile after passing through Whitstone turn right on an unclassified road signposted "Week St Mary". You will come to a crossroads in about a mile and a quarter. Continue across following signs to Canworthy Water. This will carry you along narrow back roads with one right turn just past South Wheatley before you come to Canworthy Water. Continue along this road through Warbstow Cross to Hallworthy.

Take the A395 toward Launceston out of Hallworthy. In about eight miles you will come to Kennard's House where you will turn right on the A30. At Two Bridges, about three miles down the A30 turn left on the unclassified road toward Lewannick. Stay on this road through Lewannick to Example Cross where you will join the B3257. After less than a mile turn right on to the B3254 at Congdon's Shop. Follow this road along the eastern edge of BODMIN MOOR, through Liskeard to Sandplace where you will join the A387 to Looe.

Looe to Falmouth via Padstow and Newquay

Its time to pull up stakes and leave the village of Looe for the town of Falmouth. This trip, like yesterday's, is about 100 miles long.

Take the A387 toward Liskeard bearing left on to the B3254 at Sandplace. Continue north on the B3254 until you enter Liskeard where you will follow signs to Bodmin and the A38. Stay on the A38 as it passes through Dobwalls and Doublebois then follows the Fowey Valley for the next five or six miles while remaining on the A38.

Continue along the A38 crossing the A30 until you come to the junction with the A389 at which point you should take the left fork and follow the A389 through Bodmin and Wadebridge to PADSTOW.

Leave Padstow via the B3276 through Windmill, St Merryn and Porthcothan to Trenance. Continue on the B3276 along Watergate Bay and into NEWQUAY. In Newquay pick up the A3075 and follow it south through Goonhavern to Three Burrows where, at the roundabout, you will pick up the A30. About 4 miles beyond Three Burrows, at Scorrier you will turn left on to the B3298. Travel south about six miles until the B3298 joins the A393. Continue along the A393 until it joins the A39 about two miles south of Ponsanooth. Follow the A39 through PENRYN to FALMOUTH.

Falmouth to Truro to St Austell to Falmouth

The coast of Cornwall between St Austell and Falmouth is not as frequented by tourists as the rest of the county. Perhaps today you will receive a bit of a respite from the crowds you have probably grown to expect. The drive will skirt an area of many china clay pits. The waste from this clay production dots the countryside in large white mounds. Some people consider them a terrible eye-sore while others consider them starkly beautiful - in the right light. Today's tour is about 80 miles long.

Depart Falmouth on the A39, continuing through Penryn and Truro. Pass through TRURO on the A39 and just a mile past the center of town turn right on to the A390. Continue to Tresillian Creek and after one mile branch left on the B3275 to proceed through Ladock and New Mills. About six miles beyond New Mills you will join the A30 and continue through Indian Queens (Some connection to Pocahontas, perhaps?) to the junction with the B3274 about six and a half miles beyond Indian Queens. Turn right and drive about a mile to ROCHE. Just south of the village and virtually in the shadow of Roche Rock turn left on an unclassified road toward Carbis and Bugle. Continue through Bugle following narrow unclassified roads through Rosevean and Bridges to LUXULYAN. Leave Luxulyan on an unclassified road which parallels the railroad for about one and a quarter miles then passes under the Treffry Viaduct and the railroad. About two miles after the underpass, at a T-junction turn left toward St Blazey.

Take the A390 out of St Blazey and through St Blazey Gate to ST AUSTELL. Take the second exit from the first roundabout you meet in St Austell then continue to the second roundabout where you will take the first exit which is the B3273, signposted "Mevagissey". Continue through Pentewan to MEVAGISSEY. Follow the road along the harbor and continue south on an unclassified road toward Portmellon. Just as you reach Portmellon turn right, up the hill toward Bodrugan, Trewollock and GORRAN HAVEN. Leave town on the main unclassified road to Gorran Churchtown. After the T-junction on the south side of Gorran Churchtown, continue more or less straight onto a lesser unclassified road toward CAERHAYS CASTLE. Follow the narrow road through hairpin turns on the descent to the beach, past the 'castle' and back steeply up to St Michael Caerhays. Three quarters of a mile past the church take the second left toward Tippetts Shop. Take the next left on to another byroad and continue along through Tippets Shop to a T-junction where you turn right and in less than half a mile turn left on to the A3078.

Follow the A3078 through Ruan High Lanes and within a mile of VERYAN. Continue on to ST JUST IN ROSELAND and one mile beyond take the left fork of the A3078 into ST MAWES and past the harbor and the ferry landing. Turn left staying on the A3078 four tenths of a mile after you pass the ferry dock. Climb up past the castle and continue back to St Just-in-Roseland and there branch left on to the B3289 and take the ferry across the River Fal. Once across the river, continuing on the B3289, you will pass TRELISSICK GARDENS and at Playing Place ( Don't you just wonder at the derivation of some of these names?!) turn left on to the A39 and follow it back to Falmouth.

Falmouth to Penzance to Land's End to Falmouth

The English mainland ends abruptly in spectacular cliffs with the sea crashing at their feet below. This place, along with the enigmatic St Michael's Mount and several prehistoric sites, draws you to the west today. The tour is about 60 miles.

Take the A39 between Falmouth and Penryn where you will pick up the A394. Continue on the A394 right across the top of the Lizard peninsula, through Helston to the roundabout in Goldsithney. Exit the roundabout at the first left, on an unclassified road leading to MARAZION, which lies opposite ST MICHAEL'S MOUNT. Follow the unclassified road from Marazion toward Penzance joining the A30 at a roundabout just past Longrock and continue into PENZANCE.

From Penzance follow Newlyn and Mousehole signs to leave by the A3315. Drive along the harbor and proceed to NEWLYN. Cross a bridge and turn left on to an unclassified road which follows the coast to MOUSEHOLE; turn left and at the harbor turn right, then right again on a road signposted "PAUL". Climb the bluffs to the village, pass the church and turn left. Within half a mile turn left at a T-junction on to the B3315. After five miles turn left and, still on the B3315, descend round a hairpin bend before ascending to the edge of TREEN. Remain on the B3315 and after three quarters of a mile pass the turn for PORTHCURNO. Continue with the Land's End road and in half a mile turn right. Within two miles turn left on to the A30 and follow it to LAND'S END.

Return along the A30 and continue to SENNEN, then after one and three quarters miles turn left on the B3306, signposted "St Just". Within three miles turn left again on to the A3071. Two and a half miles southeast of here lies CARN EUNY. Follow the A3071 into ST JUST and leave on the B3306, proceeding to PENDEEN. Continue through MORVAH to ZENNOR south of which lies CHYSAUSTER prehistoric village. Stay on the B3306 to ST IVES then follow Hayle signs to leave St Ives on the A3074. At the roundabout where the A3074 joins the A30, take the first exit on to the B3301 to Hayle. There after passing under the railroad tracks, bear right on to the B3302 toward Leedstown. Turn left in Leedstown on to the B3280 following it to its junction with the B3297. Turn a hard right on to the B3297 and in less then three quarters of a mile turn left on an unclassified road toward Penmarth and Longdowns. You will rejoin the A394 at Rame. Turn left and follow the A394 into Penryn where you will turn right on to the A39 for Falmouth.

Falmouth to Helston to Lizard to Falmouth

The granite cliffs, coves and fishing villages of the Lizard are your destinations on today's tour of about 60 miles.

Take the A39 between Falmouth and Penryn where you will pick up the A394. Continue on the A394 across the top of the Lizard peninsula again, to HELSTON. Leave Helston by the A3083 Lizard road, and after passing the Culdrose Royal Naval Air Station turn left on to the B3293 St Keverne road. Continue to Mawgan Cross War Memorial, branch left over the crossroads on to an unclassified road for Mawgan. Bear right with the signposts marked St. Martin and continue through St Martin's Green to Newtown in St. Martin. Keep left and in 250 yards turn left again. In one and a half miles or so turn left at the T-intersection. Continue straight through the next crossroads and in three quarters of a mile turn left and descend into HELFORD. Return for three quarters of a mile and turn left to the hamlet of St Anthony. Continue through the village, following the road alongside Gillan Creek and after one mile turn left following signs to St Keverne. Climb up from the creek bed and at the edge of Gillan keep right on to a byroad again following signs into ST KEVERNE.

Leave by the B3293 Helston and Coverack road and in one and a quarter miles turn left on to an unclassified road before joining the B3294. Descend into COVERACK and return along the B3294 and B3293 Helston road for four miles, turn left at the crossroads marked "Cadgwith". Cross the Goonhilly Downs with its incongruous juxtaposition of the satellite communications station and the numerous Bronze Age burial mounds doting the area. In three miles turn right at the T-junction and in three quarters of a mile turn left at the crossroads toward Ruan Minor. Turn left in Ruan Minor and drop steeply into CADGWITH. Continue alone the unclassified road by following Lizard signs. Within three quarters of a mile turn right and in another three quarters of a mile turn left on to the A3083 for LIZARD.

Return along the A3083 following Helston signs. In four miles turn left on the B3296 and continue into MULLION. In the village leave the B3296 for an unclassified road signposted "Poldhu Cove". (NOTE: About half a mile's walk north up the coast from Poldhu Cove is CHURCH COVE, which I have you driving to later. If you prefer to walk, you can avoid the drive.) Cross the bridge at Poldhu Cove, climb the hill and continue into Cury. In half a mile turn left following signs to Helston and in one and three quarters miles turn left to rejoin the A3083. Go through the roundabout, staying on the B3083 toward Helston, and about a quarter mile on turn left on to an unclassified road. In about three miles you will come to Berepper and Gunwalloe. Turn left in Gunwalloe and follow the unclassified road to CHURCH COVE. Return to the B3083 by the same roads down which you have come. Follow the B3083 toward Helston and at the junction with the A394 turn left toward Penryn. Follow the highway to Penryn and there take the A39 south into Falmouth.

Falmouth to Tintagel

Today you make for Tintagel. The drive there will be relatively direct with no stops scheduled. Use the day to walk the cliffs and countryside around Tintagel or to spend more time at a spot you have been through earlier in the tour.

Depart Falmouth on the A39, continuing through Penryn and Truro. Just on the northeastern outskirts of Truro turn left on to the A3076. Follow the A3076 about seven miles turning right on the A30 when you come to it. After about four miles the A30 and the A39 will merge. They will run together for about a mile and when they separate you should branch left with the A39. Continue through Wadebridge to Valley Truckle, just south of Camelford, where you will turn left on to the B3266. After less than three tenths of a mile you will come to a crossroads which you should go straight across on to an unclassified road. Continue on this road to Rockhead where you will cross the B3314, staying on the same unclassified road. Less than four tenths of a mile after crossing the B3314 turn right on to another unclassified road and continue less than a mile to the junction with the B3263. Turn left on the B3263 and follow it into TINTAGEL.

Tintagel to Glastonbury to Wells to Bath

You bid farewell to Cornwall today. Only a few stops are suggested as this will be one of your longer drives and an afternoon exploring Bath lies at the end of it. It would also be a good idea to make an early start, if possible.

Take the B3263 from to Trewarmett. Stay on the B3263 to the junction with the B3314 and turn left. Continue on the 3214 until you meet the A39 and turn left. In less than two and a half miles, just past Starapark, turn right on to the A395. Continue on the A395 until you meet and turn left on the A30 at Kennard's House. Stay with the A30 past Launceston to the outskirts of Okehampton. If its still early as you leave Launceston, consider a detour to BRENT TOR, which you can probably see on the horizon to the south.

Just about five miles west of Okehampton, at the interchange with the A386 take it north toward Great Torrington and Bideford. After about six miles on the A386, turn left on to the A3072. Stay on the A3072 for about twelve miles until it joins the A377, which you should follow to Crediton. Continue on the A3072 as you leave Crediton, then follow the A396 until you turn right on the A361 at the roundabout just north of Tiverton. Stay on the A361 to its junction with the M5 where you will turn north toward Bridgwater and Bristol. You entered the M5 at junction 27; stay with it until junction 23, just north of Bridgwater. Pickup the A39 as you exit the M5 and head east through Street to GLASTONBURY.

Remain on the A39 on leaving Glastonbury, following it six miles to WELLS. Continue on the A39 until you come to the A362 at Farrington Gurney, turning right and proceeding four miles to Radstock. Turn left on the A367 at Radstock and follow it in to BATH (town plan on atlas page 132).

Bath to Shaftesbury to Stonehenge to Bath

Today's tour will take you to the foremost stone-age monument in Britain - Stonehenge. Stonehenge is open 9:30 AM -6:30 PM. Along the way you will stop in the ancient town of Shaftesbury.

Leave Bath on the London Road to the A4. Continue on the A4 past its junction with the A46 to Batheston. In Batheston, go round the roundabout and take the A363 toward Bradford-on-Avon. You will enter BRADFORD-ON-AVON about seven miles after leaving Bath. Follow the A363 out of town toward Trowbridge. Continue on the A363 through Trowbridge and North Bradley to its junction with the A350 in Yarnbrook. Take the A350 through Westbury and around Warminster (where it joins the A36 for a time) to SHAFTESBURY.

Following signs to SALISBURY (town plan on atlas page 144), take the A30 out of Shaftesbury. Continue on the A30 through Ludwell and Barford St Martin to Wilton. In Wilton at the roundabout, proceed straight across on to an unclassified road, which will meet the A360 in a mile and a half. Turn left on to the A360 and follow it to its roundabout with the A303, on which you will turn right. In about a mile and three quarters you will come to the junction with the A344. Turn a hard left back and two tenths of a mile down the road you will arrive at STONEHENGE. Follow signs to parking.

Take the A303 toward Amesbury where, at the roundabout about two miles down the road, you should take the A345 north toward Durrington and Marlborough. About a mile past West Chisenbury the A342 will fork to the left, take that fork into DEVIZES, about eight miles up the road.

Leave Devizes on the A361 toward Trowbridge. At the junction with A365, turn right on it and continue into Melksham. At the second roundabout pickup the A350 and within about three and a half miles you will come to LACOCK.

Return to Melksham on the A350 and there rejoin the A365 toward the A4, Box and Bath. At the junction with the A4 turn left toward Bath and drive the last six miles back to town.

Bath to Windsor

Today you turn back toward London but just to prolong the tour a little longer why don't you stop in Windsor on the way?

Leave Bath on the London Road to the A4. Continue on the A4 past its junction with the A46 to Batheston. Stay on the A4 through the roundabout in Batheston and on to Chippenham where you will pickup the A350 toward the M4 and London. Once on the M4 continue toward London, skirting Reading and exiting at junction 6 on the A355 toward WINDSOR, one and a half miles south or continue on the A4 into London.
